Educating for Liberty
Peter J. Leithart - 01/06/11
In this lecture, Peter J. Leithart discusses “Educating for Liberty: Preparing Students for the Demands of Self-Government.” He states:
Educational questions are always political because they express an institutionally embodied vision of ourselves. And education is an especially charged political issue because educational systems explicitly aim to propel the values of a political community into another generation.
In the face of some modern errors, Leithart offers the following thoughts:
An alternative educational paradigm much rest on an alternative anthropology. . . . this alternative anthropology would begin from . . . "I love therefore I am."
